Upon learning that the name of the island translates to ‘rat’s nest‘, the expectations weren’t really that high. The reality of Rottnest though, is far from a pile of rat’s nests. Turquoise water washing up against sparkling beaches with every twist and turn, there’s no better excuse to keep taking breathers from riding, even if the real reason is that your butt is burning.
Oh, and then there are the quokkas. Decision made? Thought as much. Book your tickets through Rottnest Express who offer a student rate (even if your student card expired in 2014 apparently) and bags a bike once you’re on the island.

With a quick few days in Perth, our day on Rottnest Island, although long and leaving me with a bruise on both butt cheeks, was by far the best. It would be negligent not to mention the rest of our time on the mainland, however.
With Bread in Common only a few doors down from our Fremantle-based Airbnb, we were not left disappointed, but did leave with a loaf of sourdough. A visit to the Little Creatures Brewery to watch the sun sink over the water as we sunk a few, was balanced out with our daily serve of greenery at Stackwood. They sell plants by the way. We didn’t eat greens, we’re on holidays for goodness sake. And to finish it all off, going to a game of AFL at the new Perth Optus Stadium. Tick.

Picking up our car from Bayswater Car Rentals, the only ones who would rent to us young under-twenty-fivers, it’s time to hit the road.
